On an estate house the specification is settled before we arrive and our job is to deliver it accurately and on the builder's programme. On a one-off we are usually the first electrician on the site, sizing for a well pump and a treatment plant, and setting out every socket with the person who will live there. In Carlow the odds of walking into either are close to even, which is true of nowhere else on our patch.

The job is not the same across the county
Three electoral areas, and no dominant one
Carlow's building splits 275 completions around Carlow town, 248 around Muinebeag, which most people still call Bagenalstown, and 210 around Tullow. That is the flattest spread of any county we cover apart from Longford, and it is unusual: most counties on our patch have one area doing half the work, like Portlaoise at 59.2% of Laois or Tullamore at 48% of Offaly. For you it means the county has no single busy corner and no quiet one. For us it means Carlow gets covered as one run rather than one town.
The estate half: what is already decided before we quote
423 of Carlow's new homes in three years were scheme houses, most of them on the edges of Carlow town and Tullow. On that kind of build the wiring specification comes from the developer, the fuse board position is fixed on the drawing, and the socket count is whatever the plan says. The decisions worth making are the ones that close early: where the car charger cable is run before the driveway goes down, whether there is a spare way left in the board, and whether the ducting for anything outside the house goes in while the ground is still open. Once the plasterboard is on, every one of those gets more expensive.
The one-off half: a different quote entirely
253 of Carlow's completions were one-off houses on their own sites, 34.6% of the total and the second-highest share of any county we cover after Longford. A rural site normally brings a wastewater treatment plant with its own pump and aerator, often a well or borehole with a pressure system, and an ESB Networks connection priced per site rather than per estate. The older stock is where the rewire questions are
4,769 Carlow homes predate 1961 and another 5,577 went up between 1961 and 1990, together nearly half the county's 21,569 houses. The pre-1961 stock, much of it in the older streets of Carlow town and Bagenalstown and in the cottages between them, is where rubber-insulated cable and lighting circuits with no earth are still live questions. The 1961 to 1990 band depends heavily on which end of it a house sits at. The other 44.4% of the county went up between 1991 and 2010, and that stock rarely needs rewiring at all: the cable is sound and the board is the job.
