Fuse Board (Consumer Unit) Upgrade Cost in Ireland 2026

I get asked about fuse board prices nearly every week. The honest answer is that a straight swap is one of the cheaper jobs an electrician does — but the number on the quote depends entirely on what's behind that board. This guide lays out what a consumer unit upgrade actually costs in 2026, what pushes the price up, and when you're legally obliged to do it. No fear, no sales pitch — just the real figures.

What's a Fuse Board, and What's a Consumer Unit?

They're the same thing. "Fuse board" is the old name; "consumer unit" is the correct modern term. It's the box where your electricity supply splits out into the individual circuits around your house — lights, sockets, cooker, shower, immersion. Every one of those circuits runs through a protective device in that box. On an old board those devices are rewireable fuses (literally a strip of fuse wire). On a modern board they're miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) and residual current devices (RCDs), or the two combined into a single RCBO.

What a Consumer Unit Upgrade Costs in 2026

A straight like-for-like swap — new board, same position, sound existing wiring — typically costs €350–€600 including VAT. That covers the board itself, the protective devices, the labour, full testing and a Safe Electric completion certificate. Most domestic swaps are a half-day to a full day on site.

The price climbs above that range when the job isn't a clean swap. If your earthing or main bonding needs bringing up to standard, if the board is in an awkward spot, or if the upgrade uncovers faults on the existing circuits, you're into remedial work — and that's where a €450 swap can become a €900–€1,400 job. None of that is padding; it's work that has to happen for the new board to be safe and certifiable. A good electrician checks for it before quoting, so the figure you're given is the figure you pay.

Straight Swap vs Remedial Works — Where the Money Goes

This is the single biggest thing that decides your price, so it's worth understanding. A straight swap assumes the cables coming into the board are in good nick, the earthing is sound, and the board location is accessible. Remedial works are anything extra the installation needs to be brought up to standard. The common ones:

  • Earthing and main bonding — Older homes often have undersized or missing earth conductors and bonding to the water and gas pipes. Current standard (IS 10101) requires a 10mm main earth and 10mm main bonding in most domestic setups. Bringing this up to standard is a safety essential, not an upsell, and usually adds €100–€300.
  • Condition of the existing wiring — Putting a modern RCD on top of old rubber- or lead-sheathed cable can reveal leakage faults that the old fuse board simply never noticed. If circuits need repair before the board will hold, that's extra labour.
  • Extra circuits or a bigger board — A four-bed with outbuildings, an electric shower and an EV charger needs more ways than a two-bed apartment. More circuits means a bigger board and more devices.
  • Location and access — A board boxed in behind shelving in a hot press takes longer than one clear on a hallway wall.
  • Surge protection (SPD) — Increasingly fitted as standard to protect modern electronics; adds a modest amount to the board cost.

Why RCD and RCBO Protection Actually Matters

This is the part that's worth more than the price saving. An MCB protects the cable from overload and short circuit. An RCD protects you — it watches for current leaking to earth (through a faulty appliance, a nicked cable, or a person) and cuts the supply in around 25–40 milliseconds at 30mA. That's fast enough to stop a shock becoming fatal. An old rewireable fuse does none of this; it only blows on a heavy overload, long after the danger has passed.

An RCBO combines both jobs in one device, per circuit. That's the gold standard, and it's what I fit as a matter of course. The advantage is isolation: if a fault develops on the kitchen sockets, only the kitchen sockets trip — your freezer, your lights and your alarm stay on. On an old split-load board, one earth fault could drop half the house. IS 10101, Ireland's national wiring rules, requires RCD protection (typically 30mA) on socket circuits, lighting, and circuits feeding equipment outdoors — which is exactly why a board with no "test" button anywhere on it is no longer compliant.

The Real Trigger: Old Rewireable Fuseboards

If you open your board and see ceramic or plastic fuse carriers with a strip of wire across them, that's a rewireable fuseboard — and it's the number-one reason for an upgrade. These boards pre-date RCD protection entirely. There's no automatic shock protection, the fuse wire can be replaced with the wrong rating (a fire risk), and the board itself is often 40+ years old with tired connections. You'll also commonly see early "split-load" boards from the 90s and 2000s with a single RCD covering everything — better than fuse wire, but they nuisance-trip and drop too many circuits at once. Both are sound candidates for a modern RCBO board.

When You Legally Need to Upgrade

There's no law that says you must rip out a working board just because it's old. But there are clear points where an upgrade becomes a legal or practical requirement:

  1. Any new circuit or significant alteration. Add an EV charger, an electric shower, a heat pump or an extension, and the new and affected work must meet IS 10101 — which means RCD protection. If the existing board can't provide it, it has to be upgraded as part of the job.
  2. A failed inspection. If an Electrical Installation Condition Report flags the board as a C1 (danger present) or C2 (potentially dangerous) — which a rewireable board with no RCD often is — it must be put right to pass.
  3. Letting a property. Landlords have a duty to provide a safe electrical installation; an EICR and any resulting board upgrade is the practical route to meeting it.
  4. Selling, or a mortgage/insurance request. A buyer's surveyor or an insurer may ask for proof of a compliant installation. A modern board plus certificate is what satisfies that.

In every one of those cases the work has to be done by a Safe Electric registered electrician and signed off with a completion certificate. That cert is the legal record that the board and connected circuits meet IS 10101. Without it the work isn't compliant, and your insurer may decline a claim. You can verify any electrician's registration on the Safe Electric register before they start.

Is There a Grant for a Fuse Board Upgrade?

Short and honest answer: no, there is no general homeowner grant for rewiring or a consumer unit swap in Ireland. Be wary of anyone who tells you otherwise. There are, however, three schemes that can cover electrical works (including a board upgrade) indirectly, depending on your circumstances:

  • Housing Aid for Older People — for essential repairs to the home of an older person, which can include electrical work. Administered by your local authority.
  • Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability — for changes that make a home suitable for a person with a disability; rewiring can fall within scope.
  • Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant — up to €50,000 (or €70,000 for a derelict property) to bring a long-vacant home back into use, where a full rewire and new board would be part of the refurbishment.

Fuse Board Upgrades for EV Chargers

This is the most common reason I upgrade boards now. A 7kW home charger needs its own dedicated, RCD-protected circuit, and a lot of older boards don't have the space or the right protection to take one safely. What's Included in a Proper Job

  • A new consumer unit sized for your circuits, with spare ways for future additions
  • Modern protective devices — individual RCBOs per circuit where practical, or RCD plus MCBs to suit
  • Surge protection (SPD) where appropriate
  • Earthing and main bonding checked and brought up to IS 10101 standard
  • Full testing of the board and every connected circuit — insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance, RCD trip times
  • A Safe Electric completion certificate and a labelled board you can actually read

How Long It Takes, and Living With It

A straight swap is a half-day to a full day. The power is off for most of that, so plan around the freezer and any home working. If remedial earthing or bonding is needed, or circuits need repair before the board will hold, it can run longer — I'll tell you that upfront when I quote, not when I'm standing in your hot press. You get the certificate the same day the testing is signed off.

Is It Worth It?

The consumer unit protects everything downstream of it and everyone in the house. Moving from fuse wire to modern RCBO protection is the difference between a fault tripping in milliseconds and a fault becoming a fire.
