A full house rewire is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make to an older property. It brings your electrical system up to current standards, improves safety, and sets the foundation for modern living — from EV chargers to smart home systems. Here's exactly what the process looks like when we handle it.
The Initial Survey
Every rewire starts with a detailed survey of your property. We assess the existing wiring, identify the consumer unit location, map out circuit requirements, and discuss your plans for the home. This is where we talk through socket placement, lighting design, and any future-proofing you'd like — things like EV charger pre-wiring or home office circuits. The survey typically takes an hour, and you'll get a fixed-price quote within 48 hours.
First Fix: Days 1–4
First fix is where the heavy lifting happens. We lift floorboards, chase walls, and run all new cabling throughout the property. Every circuit is run in modern twin-and-earth cable back to a new consumer unit. We install back-boxes for sockets and switches, run feeds for lighting circuits, and pre-wire for any specialist requirements like cooker circuits, immersion heaters, or outdoor supplies. During first fix, we work room by room to keep disruption contained.
Second Fix: Days 5–7
Once plastering and decoration are complete, we return for second fix. This is where sockets, switches, light fittings, and the consumer unit are fitted and connected. We install RCBOs on every circuit for maximum protection — each circuit is individually protected, so a trip on one doesn't affect the rest of the house. Smoke and heat detectors are wired in during this phase too.
Testing & Certification: Day 8
The final day is dedicated to testing. Every circuit is tested for continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, and earth fault loop impedance. We complete a full Electrical Installation Condition Report and issue a RECI certificate — the official record that your installation meets IS 10101, the national wiring standard. This certificate is essential for insurance, sale, or letting purposes.
What About Living in the House?
Most families stay in the property during a rewire. We always maintain at least one working lighting and socket circuit so you're never without power overnight. We plan the work in phases and keep you informed daily. A typical three-bed semi takes 8 working days from start to certification — and we stand over that timeline.
Choosing the Right Contractor
The most important thing to look for is RECI registration. A RECI-registered contractor is independently audited, carries the correct insurance, and can legally issue completion certificates. Without that cert, your installation isn't compliant — and your insurer may not cover you. We're proud to be RECI registered and Safe Electric listed, and every job we complete comes with full documentation.
