Tethered vs Untethered EV Chargers: Which to Choose (Ireland 2026)

When homeowners ask me which charger to buy, the choice usually isn't the brand — it's whether to get a tethered unit with the cable already attached, or an untethered one that's just a socket you plug your own cable into. Both do the same job: a 7kW home charge over 6–8 hours on the standard single-phase supply nearly every Irish house has. The difference is in how you live with it day to day, and what it costs. Here's the plain version.

What "Tethered" and "Untethered" Actually Mean

A tethered charger has a fixed cable bolted to the unit, ending in a connector you plug straight into the car. You park, grab the cable off its holster, plug in, done. An untethered charger (sometimes called "socketed") is just the wall box with a Type 2 socket on the front — you keep your own cable in the boot, plug one end into the wall and the other into the car each time. Same internals, same 7kW output, same SEAI grant. The only real difference is whether the cable lives on the wall or in your car.

Connector Types: Why Type 2 Is the One That Matters

Across the EU, Type 2 (Mennekes) is the standard AC connector — it's the common plug for AC charging, and every new EV sold in Ireland uses it on the car side. So whether your charger is tethered or untethered, the home end is Type 2. You may still hear about Type 1, an older five-pin connector found on some early imports like the first-generation Nissan Leaf or older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEVs. This is the one situation where the tethered-vs-untethered choice has a catch: a tethered Type 2 charger won't fit a Type 1 car at all. If you drive an older import, an untethered charger plus a Type 2-to-Type 1 cable is usually the cleaner answer — another reason to check the socket on your own car before you buy.

The Case for Tethered: Convenience and a Lower Price

Tethered wins on the two things people notice most. First, day-to-day use — there's no cable to fetch, uncoil, or wrestle in the rain with cold hands. You pull up, plug in, walk inside. For most people charging the same car on the same driveway every night, that small bit of friction removed adds up. Second, cost: a tethered unit is usually a little cheaper than the equivalent untethered model, because you're not buying a separate cable on top — a decent 5m Type 2 cable on its own runs roughly €120–€200. The trade-off is that you're locked to that connector and that cable length. If the cable gets damaged, replacing a fixed tethered cable is a bigger job than swapping a loose one.

The Case for Untethered: Tidy and Future-Proof

Untethered wins on flexibility and looks. The wall unit is smaller and neater with no cable hanging off it — which matters if it's on the front of the house and you care how it looks. Because the cable is yours and separate, you can choose the length you want (a longer cable if your parking spot is awkward), upgrade or replace it cheaply, and you're never tied to a single connector type. That's the future-proof argument: if you change cars, sell the house to someone with a different EV, or the connector standard shifts again, a socketed charger adapts without ripping anything off the wall. The cost is a small daily faff — getting the cable out of the boot every time — and a cable that needs somewhere to live.

What It Costs to Install in Ireland

A typical home charger installation runs €1,200–€1,800 before the grant, fitted and certified. That covers the charger itself, a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit, the cable run, mounting, and full testing with a Safe Electric certificate for the new circuit. Where you land in that range depends mostly on the distance from your board to the parking spot and whether your existing board has the spare capacity and protection to take a new 32A circuit. Tethered units sit slightly lower in that range than socketed ones once you account for the separate cable. A few things that push the price up:

  • A long cable run — chargers ideally sit within 10 metres of the consumer unit; longer runs need more cable and labour
  • A fuse board upgrade — older boards often can't safely take an extra high-current circuit, so the board gets upgraded as part of the job
  • Awkward routing — going around the back of the house, under a path, or through a wall all add time

The SEAI €300 Grant — Same for Both

This is the one place the tethered-vs-untethered choice makes no difference at all. The SEAI Electric Vehicle Home Charger Grant pays up to €300 toward the purchase and installation of a home charge point, and it applies to tethered and untethered units alike — the grant is about the charger, not the cable. To qualify you need an eligible electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle, off-street parking, and installation by a registered electrician. Smart Features Either Way

Tethered or untethered, buy a smart charger. Brands like Zappi, Easee, Ohme and Hypervolt let you schedule charging for cheaper night-rate electricity, which is where the real running-cost saving lives — charging an EV at home overnight is far cheaper per kWh than public rapid charging. Smart units need a decent Wi-Fi signal at the charger location, so check the signal on your driveway before you commit. The smart side is independent of the cable choice — you can get a basic or smart version of both tethered and untethered units.

So Which Should You Choose?

If you charge one car on the same driveway every night and want the least daily hassle, go tethered — it's cheaper, simpler, and the fixed cable is one less thing to think about. If you want the neatest-looking unit, might change cars, drive an older Type 1 import, or just like keeping your options open, go untethered. Neither is wrong. Both charge at 7kW, both qualify for the €300 grant, both get a Safe Electric certificate from us. The only genuinely poor choice is letting someone who isn't registered install it — an EV charger pulls around 32 amps on a dedicated circuit, and that cert is what protects you for insurance and is required for the grant claim.
