When you're hiring an electrician for any project — whether it's a socket installation or a full house rewire — RECI certification is the single most important thing to check. It's the national standard that separates qualified, insured professionals from everyone else.
What Is RECI?
RECI stands for the Register of Electrical Contractors of Ireland. It's the body responsible for regulating electrical contractors in Ireland. To become RECI registered, a contractor must demonstrate that they have the required qualifications, carry adequate insurance, and operate to the standards set out in the national wiring rules (IS 10101). RECI-registered contractors are audited regularly to ensure they maintain these standards.
What Does RECI Registration Guarantee?
When you hire a RECI-registered contractor, you're guaranteed several things:
- Qualified electricians — Every electrician on site holds the appropriate craft qualification and is competent to carry out the work
- Insurance — The contractor carries public liability insurance and professional indemnity cover. If something goes wrong, you're protected
- Compliance — All work is carried out in accordance with IS 10101 (the Irish national wiring standard) and signed off with a completion certificate
- Certification — On completion, you receive a formal certificate that confirms the work meets the national standard. This is a legal document
Why the Certificate Matters
The completion certificate issued by a RECI contractor isn't just paperwork — it has real consequences. Your home insurance provider may require evidence of certified electrical work. If you're selling your property, the solicitor will ask for electrical certs. If you're renting, you have a legal obligation to ensure the electrical installation is safe and certified. Without a valid cert, you could face issues with insurance claims, property sales, or rental compliance.
What to Look for When Hiring
Before hiring any electrician, ask these three questions:
- Are you RECI registered? — Ask for their registration number and verify it on the RECI website
- Will I get a completion certificate? — The answer should always be yes, for any job involving new wiring or modifications to existing circuits
- Are you Safe Electric listed? — Safe Electric is the public-facing brand of RECI. A Safe Electric listed contractor is verified and searchable on safeelectric.ie
